Takema Tea was cherished as a special tea, “Gozen cha”, presented to the feudal lord of the Hosokawa domain.

Its history dates back to the early Edo period, when it was first presented to Lord Tadayoshi Hosokawa, the 540,000-koku lord of Higo Province, while he was inspecting the domain.

Initially submitted as tribute tea paid as annual taxes, records later indicate it was purchased by the feudal lord, thereby earning the honor of becoming the feudal lord's official tea.

Initially offered as tribute tea, “Kenjō-cha” paid as annual taxes, records later indicate the lord purchased it, granting it the honor of becoming a tea supplier to the domain lord.

Since then, Takema Tea has been used as “Gozen cha” to be served for the lord by successive generations of the Hosokawa family.

Waka Store is the only retailer selling matcha made from Takema Tea from Japan to overseas markets. We invite you to try it.
